Curriculum
We follow the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ (EYFS), a statutory framework that sets out the standards for learning, development and care of children from birth to five years old. Of the seven areas of learning and development in the EYFS, the key generic areas of learning are personal, social and emotional development, physical development and communication and language.
Our approach to learning is child-centred and play-based. Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget spoke of play as ‘the work of childhood’. Through play, children develop language skills, creativity, and advance socially and intellectually. A ‘playful’ approach to learning builds on children’s interests, existing knowledge and experiences.
Central to the learning and wellbeing of each child is their ‘key person’ who, through ongoing observations, makes informed decisions about how best to support learning and development. ‘Profile books’, which parents are welcome to browse at any time, contain observations and annotated examples of work.
The EYFS promotes ‘partnership working’ between school and families to ensure the best start possible for children. There is time to talk briefly to your child’s ‘key person’ at drop-off and collection. More extended meetings to discuss the children and their progress occur regularly throughout the year.
